Term:Aversive Conditioning
Definition (Myers):a type of counterconditioning that associates an unpleasant state (such as nausea) with an unwanted behavior (such as drinking alcohol. 1.
Definition (alternative): learning in which punishment or other unpleasant stimulation is used to reduce the frequency of an undesirable response. 2.
Contextual explanation: It is a way to modify one's undesirable behavior by associating it with a noxious/unpleasant event.
EXAMPLE: There is a drug that causes nausea. If that drug is added to the alcohol you drink, than you will have nausea. After repeatedly having this drug in your alcohol, you will begin to associate drinking with nausea. (And will hopefully put you off drinking!)
