Definition (Myers): the brain's sensory switch board, located on top of the brainstem; it directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex and transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla.
Definition (alternative): Thalamus is a pair and symmetric part of the brain. It constitutes the main part of the diencephalon.
Contextual explanation: A large mass of gray matter deeply situated in the forebrain. There is one on either side of the midline. Sometimes they are interconnected at the massa intermedia.
