Term: External locus of control
Definition (Myers): the perception that chance or outside forces beyond one's personal control determine one's fate (1)
Definition (alternative): a person's basic belief system about the external influences that affect outcomes in their lives (2)
Contextual explanation: a person's belief about what causes the good or bad results in their life. Those with a high external locus of control believe that powerful outside forces (fate or chance) primarily determine events
