Psych M.D. - Déjà vu

Term: Déjà vu
Definition (Myers): That eerie sense that "I've experienced this before." Cues from the current situation may subconsciously trigger retrieval of an earlier experience.
Definition (alternative): the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an individual feels as though an event has already happened or has happened in the near past), although the exact circumstances of the previous encounter are uncertain. *
Contextual explanation: In retrieving a memory, it helps to put oneself back in the context where one experienced something. But sometimes, being in a context similar to the one we've been in before may trigger the experience of déja vu- the eerie sense that "I've been in this situation before." This is because, if we have previously been in a similar situation, the current situation may be loaded with cues that unconsciously retrieve the earlier experience. For example, if in such a context, you see a stranger who looks and walks like one of your friends, the similarity may give rise to the feeling of recognition. Or perhaps, as Lampinen suggest, a situation seems familiar when moderately similar to several events. For example, if a person briefly encounters Mary's dad, mom, brother, and sister, then he/she might think "I've seen her before" at your first encounter with Mary. This is because the person has formed a "global match" to the similarity.
