Term: Fovea
Definition (Myers): Central focal point in the retina, around which the eye’s cones cluster. 1
Definition (alternative): In the eye, a tiny pit located in the macula of the retina that provides the clearest vision of all. Only in the fovea are the layers of the retina spread aside to let light fall directly on the cones, the cells that give the sharpest image. 2
Contextual explanation: Basically the fovea is the area on the retina where the image that is being perceived hits the retina. The fovea is where all the cones are clustered. Cones are eye cells that help us see colors and descriptive details. Because these cells are clustered in this area, when the light aka the image hits this area of the retina, it sends signals to the polar and ganglion cells and transmits it to the optic nerve to the brain. 3
