Term: Social Loafing
Definition (Myers): the tendency for people in a group to exert less effort when pooling their efforts towards attaining a common goal than when individually accountable.
Definition (alternative): the tendency of individual group members to reduce their work effort as
groups increase in size as displayed by the inclination to "goof off" when performance is needed in a group, miss meetings, show up late, or fail to start or complete individual tasks. *
Contextual explanation: Negative behavior that occurs when working in a group. Because one realizes that others in one's group will also contribute to complete the given task, one will simply "goof off" and not put that much of an effort. These usually result in failure to complete individual tasks, being late on time, or failing to communicate.
