Term: Wernicke's area
Definition (Myers): Controls language reception- a brain area involved in language comprehension and expression; usually in the left temporal lobe. 1
Definition (alternative): The area of the brain that is important in language development. The Wernicke’s Area is located on the temporal lobe on the left side of the brain and is responsible for the comprehension of speech (Broca’s area is related to the production of speech). Language development or usage can be seriously impaired by damage to the Wernicke’s Area. 2 *
Contextual explanation: Wernicke's area receives and understands the auditory code from the angular gyrus and sends it to broca's area. Damage to Wernicke's area disrupts understanding, and people speak only meaningless words.
