Term: Motor Cortex
Definition (Myers): An area at the rear of the frontal lobes that controls voluntary movements. 1
Definition (alternative): The area of the cerebral cortex where impulses from the nerve centers to the muscle originate. 2
Contextual explanation: The motor cortex is basically the back part of the frontal lobe that takes control of the body movement. While I am typing this Psych M.D. The motor cortex is stimulated, sending impulses to the muscles in my fingers. To carry out movements, the motor cortex must receive information from various lobes of the brain. It gets information about position in space from the parietal lobe and so on. All of these lobes interact which stimulates the motor cortex. The left side of the motor cortex controls the body movement of the right side of the body, and the right side of the motor cortex controls the body movement of the left side of the body. Also, it is important to know that different areas in the motor cortex are responsible for specific body parts. Surgeons stimulated different cortical areas and noted the body responses which allowed them to map the motor cortex according to the body parts it controlled. (Check out image for details) 3
