Contextual explanation: Estrogen refers to the female hormone that is made from the ovary, placenta, testes, and even the adrenal cortex. It stimulates secondary sexual characteristics, and other effects like growth and maturation of bones. This means that many of the female characteristics (especially during puberty) are a result of this hormone. It is the hormone that controls the course of the menstrual cycle. 3
