Summary:

There are two distinguishes two types of love: temporary passionate love and more enduring companionate love.

We can view passionate love as an aroused state that we cognitively label as love. Strong affection of companionate love, which often emerges as a relationship matures, is enhanced by an equitable relationship and by intimate self-disclosure.

Passionate love: The theory assumes that 1) emotions have two ingredients-physical arousal plus cognitive appraisal and that 2
) arousal from any source can enhance one emotion or another, depending on how we interpret and lable the arousal.

Companionate love: A steadier type of love that involves deep, affectionate attachment.

One key to a gratifying and enduring relationship is equity: a condition in which people receive from a relationship in proportion to what they give to it.

Self-disclosure: the revealing of intimate details about ourselves, about worries, dreams, likes, dislikes, etc.
