Topic: Storing Memories in the Brian

Posted by: Keunwha Song

Key Terms:

  • Long-term potentiation : an increase in a synapse's firing potential after brief, rapid stimulation.
  • Amnesia: the loss of memory
  • Implicit memory: retention independent of conscious recollection. Also called procedural memory.
  • explicit memory: memory of facts and experiences that one can consciously know and declare
  • pocampus: a neural center located in the limbic system that helps process explicit memories for storage

Summary: Our whole past is stored permanently in our brian with complete detail . However we do not store information with exactness, memories do not reside in single, specific spots. Memories begin as impulses whizzing through brain circuits, somehow leaving permanent neural traces.
